The rapid rise of high-performance electric vehicles has brought with it a new set of engineering challenges. Vehicles such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N are capable of delivering supercar-rivalling acceleration while carrying the additional weight of large battery packs, placing considerable loads on suspension and chassis components.
With up to 650hp available through N Grin Boost, the Ioniq 5 N is capable of launching from 0-62mph in just 3.4 seconds. Combined with aggressive cornering capability and track-focused driving modes, the demands placed on the rear subframe are significantly greater than those experienced during normal road use.

During development work on the E-GMP platform, Powerflex engineers identified a weakness in the original rear subframe brace. The factory brace is manufactured from thin pressed steel and can flex under repeated loading. Over time this can allow movement within the rear subframe assembly, potentially affecting alignment and reducing the precision of the vehicle's handling characteristics.
To address this issue, Powerflex has developed the PFR26-440 Rear Subframe Brace. Manufactured from high-strength 6082 T6 aluminium and finished in durable black anodising, the new design provides substantially greater rigidity than the original component while retaining straightforward installation.

The brace is supplied complete with mounting hardware and has been engineered specifically to reinforce this critical area of the rear suspension structure. For owners who regularly enjoy spirited road driving or track use, it provides additional confidence that the subframe remains properly supported under high loads.

Finite Element Analysis testing demonstrated that the Powerflex design reduces stress concentrations around the mounting holes by up to 60%, while increasing the overall Factor of Safety by approximately seven times compared with the original pressed-steel brace. This helps resist permanent deformation and supports more consistent suspension geometry under heavy acceleration, braking and cornering loads.

The result is a rear subframe structure that remains better supported during spirited driving, helping the chassis retain the sharp, planted feel expected from a modern performance EV.

Although developed with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 incl. N in mind, the PFR26-440 is also suitable for the Hyundai Ioniq 6, Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60, making it an ideal upgrade for owners looking to strengthen a known weak point within the E-GMP platform.
